ALBUM REVIEW: YOUNG MIZ-"THE LAYOVER"
Young Miz's first full length album is conceptually a mixture of Hip Hop, R&B and Alternative sounds. Though sample heavy, nothing comes across here as overdone. Production is handled mostly by DC, along with production credits from Audio Unit and even Miz himself. Nineteen tracks usually means several good tracks plus just as much as filler. However, The LayOver doesn't fall victim to this. Miz goes introspective on the intro track "The Things I'm Thinking." The track starts things off with an in-depth look into what makes Miz the person that he has become. One thing that stands out about this album is, Miz has really grasped the ability to blend commercially crafted tracks (Video Vixxxen, Bitch I Look Good, With You), with true thought-provoking tracks ("In All Honesty," "Lost," Controversial Thoughts.") There are several songs on this project I can definitely see getting serious radio play. The production and mixing efforts on The LayOver are top notch. Every track, plus the short "plane ride skits" at the end of a few tracks blend perfectly. Young Miz doesn't disappoint lyrically either. It was very refreshing to hear a side of his music that I was previously unaware of. Though I don't think there is any real filler here, the album does lose a little bit of steam around the middle. This is all soon forgotten with the strong closing of the last five or six tracks though. If you're like me and want an album you can hit play and just let ride, then The LayOver is definitely recommended.
