THE SIGNIFICANCE OF DRAKE'S ALBUM SALES

FOR DRAKE'S DEBUT ALBUM "THANK ME LATER," HE SOLD 460K PLUS. NORMALLY THIS WOULD BE AN EXCEPTIONAL WEEK FOR A NEW ARTIST. HOWEVER, DRAKE ISN'T TRULY A NEW ARTIST AND THE HYPE SURROUNDING THE MAN WAS SO UNREAL THAT SELLING A MILLION FIRST WEEK WAS A VERY REALISTIC ASSUMPTION. IN MANY HIP HOP CIRCLES, DRAKE'S FINAL SALE TALLY CONSTITUTES A BIT OF A FLOP. I DON'T AGREE TOTALLY WITH THIS PERCEPTION, HOWEVER I DO CONSIDER HIS SALES TO BE A DISAPPOINTMENT. I THINK IF THE ALBUM WAS RELEASED AT THE HEIGHT OF HIS BUZZ (SUMMER/FALL 09) THEN HE WOULD'VE SOLD MUCH MUCH MORE. MUSIC IS JUST AS MUCH ABOUT TIMING AS TALENT ITSELF. THE PUBLIC WILL ONLY GO SO LONG BEFORE THAT BEGIN TO BECOME ACCUSTOMED TO AN ARTIST'S PRESENCE. FANS BECAME COMFORTABLE WITH DRAKE BEING IN THE GAME AND ONCE THE ALBUM LEAKED, HAD THEIR FULL FILL OF WHAT HE HAD TO OFFER. REWIND A YEAR AND I BELIEVE AN EXTRA 200-300K ALBUMS COULD OF BEEN SOLD! THIS IS STRICTLY OPINION SO WE WILL AGREE TO DISAGREE, BUT I FEEL THE EVIDENCE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.
